2. Identifying a diver in need

7. In-water rescue skills

Overall, a five star for Scuba Unlimited, and a five star for the Rescue Diver training.

After learning about skills in a classroom, you'll have to perform them in the water. We started with a pool session at Blue Ash YMCA, and then had two days of exercises at Sugar Grove. The Sugar Grove is an hour drive from Cincinnati, and both days started at 7am with the drive, and a return home around 4pm. Plan for two long days.

The Dive Masters and the Instructor were very good, and took the time to provide extensive feedback.

As you'll find out when you take this course, many people like having this certification alone to increase their confidence for handling things like ordinary household emergencies.

There are a lot of skills to do, ranging from simple things like cramp release all the way up to a complete rescue of an unconscious diver (including removal from the water). In between are things like towing a tired diver, helping panicked divers, and carrying divers out of the water.

We took the rescue Diver certification with Scuba Unlimited of Blue Ash. Like most diving certifications, rescue diver has a knowledge portion combined with an applied, in-the-water component. The knowledge portion includes:

Received Advanced Open Water certification. The professionals here are fantastic.

1. Common causes of diver stress and dive emergencies

5. Managing a dive emergency

3. Dive rescue procedures and injury treatment

4. First aid supplies and dive rescue equipment

As a prerequisite, you must be CPR / First Aid certified. These are combined through a PADI certification called Emergency First Responder (EFR) that covers the same material, but you can go to any Red Cross to get the required certification. Montgomery Fire has a good course.

6. Rescuer health and safety

Craig was very friendly and experienced, he provided me with excellent technical guidance and thorough attendance during practice, I have leant much and enjoyed the course.

In addition, you'll have to prepare an emergency assistance plan, which includes steps of emergency management for a specific dive site (Sugar Grove near Columbus in our case).

The applied part of the course is split into closed water (pool) exercises and open water exercises. Rescue diver is probably the most physically demanding certification, as it includes recovering unconscious divers from the water, a challenging task.
