Amazing building. Very informative exhibits. Go to the top floor. Was there for four hours and still didn't get through half of it. Learned a lot. Look forward to visiting again.
There's a lot to learn at this beautiful new museum. We took a 10 year old and had him read some of the texts aloud to make sure he stayed focused. He knew what the UR was from school, which helped. You couldn't really leave a child much younger than 12 or 13 alone. There is a lot of reading, but also it requires some maturity to process what you're seeing. We couldn't see everything in one day, and we even went to lunch and came back for more! Definitely a museum that merits several visits as young people grow and can take in more about the politics of slavery, court decisions that brought on the Civil War, modern day slavery, etc. The staff do a good job of talking about what's there. More would probably be better. We saw some kids on a school trip with a guide. I suspect that's the ideal way to visit. Excellent videos that show the personal risks the heroes of the Underground Railroad took, be they white or black. All around, this is learning center about American history that everyone ought to visit. Cincinnati is lucky to have it.
The modern day slavery was shown from forced labor to the sex trade.
This is a really cool museum. It looks small from the outside, but they have a lot of information packed into not that much space. And it's important information. It's stories and people that we all too often tend to forget. It's an aspect of Cincinnati history that I had never really considered before. Plus the location just by the river is incredibly scenic. Take a walk across the bridge afterward! Think about what that journey could have been like 160 years ago.
Quite eye opening. You will leave a better person.
Cost was 15.00, Veterans are free in November.
A rich experience. The terrible pain and suffering that the African slaves endured from their capture, sale, hard labor, separation of families as husbands, wives, sons and daughters were sold. The famous abolitionists were shown with murals, interactive audio and video.
Very modern and well laid out. Self guided, at your own pace. Lots of displays, some are 'hands on'. They have a full size cabin inside and many historical items to view. Great for any age. Plan on at least 1 to 2 hours, at least.
